Fukrey Review: Just go & enjoy re...

Expectations:

Right from the inception our Hindi films use to be mostly Mumbai based, but with rise of multiplex era films with other cities as its backdrop also came in prominence, especially Delhi. Even before, there were films with Delhi as its backdrop, but the whole flavor was highly missing in them. Films like 'Rang De Basanti', 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', 'Delhi Belly', 'Delhi6', 'Dev D', 'Fire', 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!', 'Vicky Donor' and many more not only used Delhi as its backdrop but has the whole soul, characters and feel of the people belonging to the city. Words like 'Jugaad', 'Thulley', 'Fukrey' and many more now were common words for even non - Delhiites too. Thus when films started being made with such names, it did not sound 100% alien to the rest of the country. Similarly, this week's release 'Fukrey' too, managed to grab its viewer's attention right from the first promo, making it clear what its title meant. But then there have been few film makers who have tasted the bitter failure as they tried to catch in on over the novelty factor, without the city or its dialect being integral part of the film. So let's find out whether 'Fukrey' may be among those few films trying to add the city as a glamour content or might be another small film on the lines of Delhi based comedies like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' or 'Delhi Belly' and many more.

Fukrey Review

Story:

'Fukrey' is story of four youngsters in need of instant money to fulfill their dreams. Hunny {Pulkit Samrat} & Choocha {Varun Sharma} need money so that they can clear their 12th board examinations and enjoy college life. Lali {Manjot Singh} too wants to join an A-Grade college so can impress his girlfriend. Zafar {Ali Fazal} on the other side needs money to take care of his ailing father. Choocha has a unique gift of having crazy dreams which after being interpreted by Hunny wins them good money through lottery. With this concept all of them approach a female don Bholi Punjaban {Richa Chadda}, so that she can finance them with the basic investment. They promise to return back her money with full profit. But things don't work out as they had planned and what happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Fukrey Movie Review

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Story might remind you of many such films like 'Ek Chaalis Ki Aakhri Local', 'Delhi Belly', etc where few losers earn quick money involving dons, cops, politicians etc. Even 'Fukrey' is on the same grounds and has nothing innovative in it, except for Varun Sharma's dream funda. There are some interesting and hilarious scenes like Pulkit, Varun and Manjot's visit to college, all the scenes involving Varun's dreams, first meet with Richa, everyone trying to make Varun sleep, Varun and Pulkit at Mata ki chowki and few more including the anti climax scenes. The makers have kept the humor working in the film, which camouflages the weak and repetitive screenplay. Such films have to be crisp and razor fast, but here it starts very slow and takes its own sweet time to establish the premise. There are few side tracks like the whole rave party; Pulkit's love track and the minister's angle which does not gel with the flow of the film. In these scenes, the humor goes missing and thus making them dragging and boring at times. Camera work is superb and does full justice to its script. Editing should have been better throughout the film.

Music & Direction:

Music by Ram Sampat is neat, but not like his earlier works. Still songs like 'Rabba', 'Karle Juggad', 'Fukrey' etc are good. The best track 'Ambarsariya' goes wasted in the background. 'Aish Karle' should've been strictly omitted from the film.

Mrigdeep Singh Lamba's last film 'Teen Thay Bhai' was a huge disappointment as it failed to give you a single smile. Two years later one can see tremendous improvement in the director as out here he somewhat delivers at least 50% of what has been promised. He also manages to extract some fine performances from the young actors. Hopefully, next time he should mature enough to even extract some good writing from his writers and might give us a 100% comic entertainer.

Performances:

Pulkit Samrat had a bad debut with 'Bittoo Boss' but here he shines throughout and impresses you with his innocence and charms. Varun Sharma as Choocha is the best thing to happen to this film. If you remove him from this film, this movie might end up as a terrible film. You will love him and his character in this film and would want to see more of him. Manjot Singh gives another good performance after his debut film 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!'. Ali Fazal gives good support, but does not match up to his small cameo as Joy Lobo in '3 Idiots'. Richa Chadda is superb in her part. Vishakha Singh and Priya Anand were good, but not impressive. Pankaj Tripathi lends good support.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum hain, in terms of some good time pass fun and entertainment. But the film fails to have its own uniqueness and ends up as a mixture of many films. If this movie would've been made by some small production house, the impact would have still been more powerful. Coming from a big production house, the movie seemed bit let down. But if you don't care for the deja vu moments then don't think much, just go & enjoy re.
