Policegiri Review : Don't even think of watching it, not even on television..

Expectations:

Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'Zanjeer' rejuvenated the good vs. evil theme in a cop drama. After the success of this cult classic, we witnessed many films on the similar ground with few exceptional films like 'Ardh Satya', 'Satyamev Jayate', etc. On the flip side there were countless films with the same theme but used in a completely masala format. In such films the hero used to be like a one man army set against the evil zamindar or tyrant harassing the poor people. This continued till the rise of multiplex era and slowly moved its base to Bhojpuri films. As the Bhojpuri films started to fade out, the fans of these films shifted their loyalty towards the South-Indian dubbed action films. Looking at the rise and demand for such films in the masses, film makers bought back this genre back in form of Hindi films like 'Dabangg', 'Singham', 'Rowdy Rathore', etc. If you look closely almost all these films had similar story line, same style of film making and were remake of hit South-Indian film. But what made them different, was the fine detailing attached to the film and most important the star power, which is very essential for such film. After the success of the initial films, almost all long lost action heroes wanted to do a remake of South-Indian hit film. The first one to join the gang is Sanjay Dutt, who is better known for his underworld based action films. His latest film 'Policegiri' is a remake of South-Indian action film which promises to be an out and out entertainer on lines of 'Singham' and other hits. So let's find out whether he might get lucky with this latest trend of action entertainers or end up as a weak clone of South-Indian dubbed films.

Policegiri Review

Story:

'Policegiri' is story of D.C.P Rudra {Sanjay Dutt} who is transferred to crime capital city Nagapuram. He uses his different style which combines the power of cop and goon to deal with the crime set in the city by political power broker Nagori Subramaniam {Prakash Raj}. This starts the cat and mouse drama between them and that's what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Story might remind you of many action potboilers set in late 80's and early 90's Hindi films. Also you will have strong remembrances of Dharmendra's hit action film 'Hukumat' in the initial parts of the film. Officially tough it's a remake of hit Tamil film - 'Saamy'. There are some entertaining scenes like Sanjay Dutt - Manoj Joshi's first meet at police station, Prakash Raj remembering his past days, Prakash Raj - Sanjay Dutt first meet followed by lots of dialogbazi throughout the film between them, Sanjay Dutt handling the procession, Sanjay Dutt using the pen in commissioner's office, etc. These scenes are hilarious and will entertain its mass audience. But with lack of strong story line and good screenplay, the movie goes on the repetitive mode with over the top style of action scenes. Also the special effects, romantic track, unnecessary dramatic moments dilute the film in big manner. After the initial fun the movie looks monotonous and predictable. Camera work is average and all the chroma work seemed terrible. Editing too is lame and weak.

Music & Direction:

Music is horrible and every song is a disaster. The choreography and Sp.Effects are terrible.

Director K S Ravikumar is a big name in the south and debuts in Hindi films with 'Policegiri'. He had all the necessary ingredients to make a hit film on lines of 'Singham' and 'Dabangg' but failed to come even close to these entertainers as his movie lacked the writing skill and star power. There was nothing new except the over the top type of action scenes in this film. Everything seemed stale and done to death type. Wished he had done a better debut with much better actors.

Performances:

Sanjay Dutt tries to repeat his early day's magic, but fails on the physical part. He looks out of shape and bloated. In front of Prachi Desai he looked like her uncle and in action scenes, was total stiff. Prachi Desai was terrible in every scene. The moment you see her with Sanjay Dutt you feel pity for the poor child. Prakash Raj is the star of the film. Despite of being repetitive and having similar character to many of his films, he still manages to entertain you in almost all his scenes with his hilarious performance. Manoj Joshi, Mukesh Rishi, Murli Sharma had nothing much to offer. Rajat Rawail and Rajpal Yadav along with Om Puri were extremely loud.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum hain in some parts, especially for its mass audience. If you are a fan of South-Indian action dubbed films and like such loud action drama then you might enjoy this film on big screen. But don't expect it to be on lines of like 'Dabangg', 'Singham' and 'Rowdy Rathore' as this one highly lacks the star power and conviction level. As for all you meaningful cinema lovers, don't even think of watching it, not even on television.
