It's a tough job for any director to make a thriller. There are lots of sub genres in the thriller category and out of which making a dark political or gangster based thriller is rather difficult. Such films need perfect script with lots of twist and turns along with fine performance by the lead actors. The director has to be precise about the way he unfolds the whole film in front of his viewers. One blunder, and the whole impact is ruined. Many times the makers come up with flawless work in form of films like 'New Delhi Times', 'Kalyug', 'Satya', 'Gulaal', 'Sarkar', 'Talaash', 'Manorama Six Feet Under', 'Mithya' and more. But then there are some who start well but end up on a confusing note or even at times with self obsessed films like '7 Khoon Maaf', 'Rajdhani Express', 'Rush', 'Road' and many such examples. Yash Raj banner is known for making one of the best entertaining romantic films and now comes up with their new venture, 'Aurangzeb'. A dark thriller, as it claims to be with gallery of good actors. So let's find out whether this different venture from this top most banner of our country will manage to give another classic hard hitting thriller or might just end up with another self obsessed film trying to copy some Hollywood style of film.

Aurangzeb Review

'Aurangzeb' is story set in the satellite city Gurgaon between families of DCP Ramakant Phogat {Rishi Kapoor} & gangster turned builder Yashwardhan Singh {Jackie Shroff}. DCP Ramakant Phogat along with his son {Sikander Kher} & nephew Aarya {Prithviraj Sukumaran} replaces Yashwardhan's spoilt brat Ajay {Arjun Kapoor} with his twin brother Vishal {Arjun Kapoor}. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Story might remind you of films like 'Mithya', 'Don', and 'Yalgaar' or to some extent Hollywood flick 'Devils Double'. Despite of all these similarities, the story has its own style and flavor. Right from the first scene it grabs you inside its storyline and keeps you glued throughout the film. The film takes its time in establishing the premise, but once set goes on its set track. [Spoilers Alert - Begins] There are some good scenes like Prithviraj explaining the whole system followed by Rishi Kapoor - Tanvi Azmi scene, Arjun Kapoor insulting Jackie Shroff and Amrita Singh in the meeting, Tanvi Azmi explaining Arjun the reason for her action, Amrita threatening Sasheh Aagha, Rishi Kapoor's chat with his son-in-law Sumeet Vyas, Prithviraj talk with Arjun before the climax followed by Arjun in the meeting with Amrita Sing and many more.

On the flip side, the narrative style is a bit slow in the initial part of the film. It gains its momentum but has few speed breakers like Sasheh Aagha track and Prithviraj's wife part. The climax fight in the hospital featuring Arjun Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Sikander Kher was over the top and becomes total filmy. The finale could have been darker rather than being emotional and dramatic. Camera work is superb and gives the movie total slick looks. [Spoilers Alert - Ends]

Music & Direction:

We have seen good thriller films getting diluted due to forced songs and dance numbers. It happens here, too. If not for the thriller genre then at least for the Mughal emperor 'Aurangzeb', who was known for his hatred for music, the makers should have strictly avoided the songs like 'Barbaadiyaan' and 'Jigra'. Background music goes well with the theme of the film.

Aurangzeb Movie Review

Debutant director Atul Sabharwal dares to make a hard hitting political gangster style thriller. He succeeds highly over the content, performance and direction style. The only place where he fails is ,a few sub plots and bit of slow narration style. He should have made it little more gripping and hard hitting towards the finale. People might find the sub plots bit confusing and hard to follow, but the director sums them up very well and does justice to its theme.

This movie highly works due to some fantastic performances by its lead actors. Rishi Kapoor gives another splendid performance after his last years performance in 'Agneepath'. He keeps breaking his own benchmarks and sets a new one with every release. Arjun Kapoor impresses with his duo performance. The hot headed one resembles with his 'Ishaqzaade' character. Prithviraj in his silent avatar is perfect. Jackie Shroff shows his expertise in his character. Amrita Singh is great, wished she had lengthier role. Sasheh Aagha looks mixture of Nisha Kothari and Mandakini and fails to impress as her mom did in her first film 'Nikaah'. Sikander Kher and Kavi Shastri overact. Tanvi Azmi, Sumeet Vyas, Anupam Kher does a great job. Deepti Naval and Swara Bhaskar are wasted.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum hain, in terms of a hard hitting thriller. The film works on its intensity, fine performances and neat direction. Though there are few sub plots and weak climax which dilutes the integrity of the film,it might not be a box office money spinner like rest of the 'Yash Raj' films, but for every good dark thriller lover this films is a must watch as the film is just like its name 'Aurangzeb' who was dark, hard hitting and unpredictable.
