Chashme Baddoor Review : 'Har Ek David Dhawan Remake - Timepass Hota Hain...'

Dated : April, 5, 2013 BY Divya Solgama

Ratings : star

David Dhawan started his film career as an editor to loads of great films. He even ghost directed films like 'Love Story', etc and later started his official direction with few terrible action films. After few bad films, he formed his own style as an entertainer which were mostly inspired by some or the other films. Films like Swarg, Aakhein, Coolie No 1, Hero No 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Judwaa, Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin, Biwi No 1, Partner and many more are perfect examples of the unofficial remakes. He used to take the basic essence of the original film and blend it with his own entertaining style. Whenever people used to see his films it did remind them of the original film but accepted as there was nothing official about it. He camouflaged it with dance and fun. But now for the first time he ventures in the world of official remake with a classic comedy from the 80's, 'Chashme Buddoor' ,a film which in terms of box office was not a blockbuster of its time but was definitely considered as one of India's finest comical films having tremendous repeat value. So let's find out whether out of form David Dhawan might strike back with this film or might end up ruining the classic.

Chashme Baddoor Review

'Chashme Baddoor' is a story of three roommates Sid (Ali Zafar), Omi (Divyendu Sharma) & Jai (Siddharth). Omi & Jai are kind of freeloaders and loves to flirt around with girls; Whereas Sid is a simple person who thinks from his heart. He falls in love with a girl next door, Seema (Taapsee Pannu). Omi & Jai too have some connection with Seema. What's the connection? Well, that's what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Basic story line works on the lines of the original, but then there are loads of new additional tracks too. Keeping the comparison with the original film aside, there are few good entertaining scenes like Anupam Kher talking to Anupam Kher on phone, Siddharth at Tapsee's house, Trio fooling Rishi Kapoor and Lillette Dubey, Divyendu and Siddharth's reaction over Ali's kissing, followed by Siddharth and Divyendu trying to create misunderstanding between Rishi - Lillette, Divyendu's shayari to Tapsee, Siddharth and Divyendu buying gift for Taapsee and few more. Most of these scenes are a not part of the original film and works mainly due to cracking dialogs by Sajid - Farhad. Their dialogs, Shayarais {By Divyendu} and one liner jokes, for a while makes you forget all the comparisons with the original film. The entertainment quotient is proper in this film.

Chashme Baddoor Movie Review

But on the flip side almost all the scenes which have been direct copy of the original does not work in its new avatar. Especially, the flashback scenes or the famous 'Chamko' scene. Also Siddharth & Divyendu trying to create misunderstanding between Rishi- Lillette, along with over the top climax. The whole simplicity and classy detailing touch of the original film is highly missing. Camera work is not that great. Editing is fine.

Music & Direction:

Music by Sajid Wajid is foot tapping. Songs like 'Ishq Mohalla', 'Early morning', 'Andha ghoda race' add the fun element to film in typical David Dhawan style. But songs like' Dhichkiaaon' (Inspired by R.D.Burman's- Ek Mein Aur Ek Tu) & 'Har Ek Friend' are chart toppers. Background music is good.

David Dhawan is a master when it comes to make entertaining films. Recently, he had lost his touch, but with 'Chashme Buddoor' he finds it back. He succeeds in creating the fun on the screen. If only he could have used some another title, it would have avoided the comparison with the classic film. He can never come close to the level of the original film. He should have made an unofficial remake, just as he used to do in past.

Ali Zafar tries very hard to fit in this character, but end up giving an average performance. His mannerism, typical looks and over confident performance does not work in favor of the film. Siddharth is cute and lovable and does a great job. Divyendu after the super performance in 'Pyar Ka Panchnama' shines here, too. His shayaris works positively for the film. Together the chemistry between Siddharth & Divyendu is awesome. Rishi Kapoor looked great and gives another good supporting performance. In one of the song, his dance might remind you of the dance from his movie 'Saagar' along with Kamal Hassan. Taapsee Pannu looked terrible and was total misfit for this character. Lillette Dubey and Bharti Achrekar lend good support. Anupam Kher was fine in few scenes, but was loud in some. Ayaz Khan was bad.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum hain.. on its own individual basis with good amount of time pass fun. In comparison with the original, this movie might end up getting a zero star ratings. But David knows his job and the level of the original classic, thus the whole new settings and youth based looks along with foot tapping numbers and comical dialogs makes this movie worth a watch. The masala film lovers after the demise of 'Himmatwala' might rejoice and sing - 'Har Ek David Dhawan Remake - Timepass Hota Hain'
