Quick Preview:

Makkhi is a silent love story of a couple Jani and Bindu who unfortunately could not be united thanks to the vile intentions of Sudeep who murders Jani. But love is beyond boundaries and Jani is reincarnated as Makkhi (a house fly). How Jani reveals himself to Bindu and finally avenges his death makes for a wonderful watching.

Story:

Although generally it is believed that dubbed stories are doomed, yet Makkhi makes an exception. The original film Eega was in Telugu and was an instant hit.

The movie begins with the voice of Ajay Devgn and Kajol who have set the pace of the story. This is how the main protagonists are introduced.

Makkhi Poster

Bindu is a benevolent micro artist who works for the betterment and aid of the underprivileged. She lives with her sister in law and she is seen as a simple, down to earth girl with a heart of gold. Jani is a typical Tollywood hero who earnestly woos Bindu. Since more than two years he has been Bindu's shadow, albeit she has never acknowledged her feelings towards him.

A chance meeting with the hope of generating funds for her NGO brings her to the office of Sudeep who is a business tycoon and has evil intentions towards all females. Since the first glance itself Sudeep is totally smitten by Bindu and immediately expresses his desire to be a part of their NGO. He also gives her a hefty amount as charity for her work. Bindu is filled with gratitude, but she is blissfully unaware of his vile intentions.

As Sudeep works with Bindu, he comes to know about Bindu's true feelings towards Jani. This does not go down too well with him and he brutally murders Jani.

Bindu is not able to get over Jani and immerses herself in her work. Ironically while she was proposing Jani over the phone, he breathed his last.

The twist in the tale is that Jani is back. He is reincarnated as a housefly. He pledges to take revenge from Sudeep and protect Bindu. In the course of the actions he reveals himself to Bindu who helps him in his mission.

How a simple Makkhi takes his revenge and is determined to have his way, no matter what, makes for an interesting watch.

Screenplay and Direction:

Director S.S. Rajamouli has let his imagination go totally wild. Although there were touches of the Tollywood evident in the screenplay, yet one could not help but marvel at the wonderful concept. The hurdles which the makkhi faces and how he braves everything is really wonderful. The tiny fly drives the main villain Sudeep mad and crazy to the extent that he even runs out nude, moves on with a bottle of Hit and goes almost insane in a bid to get rid of the fly. All these scenes leave the audience in splits with laughter.

The scenes where the Makkhi discovers and explores the world as a simple house fly and how the world initially seems totally alien to him makes us imagine how the other creatures of the world live and what the perils they face are.

Action Review:

Tollywood is known for action and action was very much present; albeit with a dash of humor in it. The end sequence was full of gun powder and fireworks, but overall the action was apt. Typical of films from down south there was slow motion bashing scenes and at times some scenes were beyond the excesses of sensibility. Yet the presence of the Makkhi made up for the lack of semblance of sanity.

Music Review:

The songs of Makkhi were perfectly in sync with the movie. The song Arre Arre Arre... is perfect and expresses the feelings of Jani with perfection. The beats are also lilting and soft with a hint of cute mischief. Other songs such as Lava Lava Seene Mein and Naam Apun ka Jaani are all interwoven with a perfect blend into the storyline.

Final Verdict:

Although Makkhis breed in filth and grime, there is nothing filthy about this Makkhi. It is rather a film with a breath of freshness. The determination of Makkhi makes us learn that if there is a will there is a way. So pursue your goals like Makkhi and you will surely win the battle.
