There's this old saying - 'Good things come in small packages'. This has been proved correct many times in our Hindi cinema too, with examples of films by Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Habib Faisal and many other directors. You do not need big superstars or foreign locations or big budget to make a good clean entertainment film. If you have a strong story line backed with decent direction and good support from the actors, you have a winner in hand. But then there are times when films with good idea are badly executed or stretched with some unwanted tracks, which makes a mess of the whole concept. Yash Raj banner has been known for making grand films with big stars. But recently, they started their venture 'Y Films' which makes films with newcomers for its target youth audience. 'Mujhse Fraandship Karoge' hit the bull eye, but 'Luv Ka The End' did not meet the expectation level. Their latest venture has an unusual name 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti', with T.V actor Ram Kapoor in it. So let's find out whether this small venture from the biggest banner of today's Hindi film industry will manage to create some ripples or might end up being just an addition to their various libraries of films.

"Mere Dad Ki Maruti" is story of a careless son Sameer {Saqib Saleem} and his over strict father Tej Khullar {Ram Kapoor}. Tej Khullar buys a brand new Maruti car and plans to gift it to his daughter and son in law at their wedding. Sameer on other hand has been given strict instructions of not to touch the car. But Sameer decides to use the car for one date with Jazleen {Rhea Chakraborty}. Due to some confusion he loses the car and thus starts the whole chase to hunt down the car or find a replica of it. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Story might look bit similar to Sharman Joshi's - 'Ferrari Ki Sawaari', but in totality is different and original. The screenplay here is completely interesting and thus converts this simple one liner plot into a feel good entertainer. Scenes like Sameer's father's love for Maruti, The whole 'Chak De India' dialog by Gattu, Sameer and Gattu trying their level best to camouflage their error by adjusting Maruti car by various means, Sameer fooling his father along with the whole climax part in the marriage and few more keeps you entertained throughout the film.

On the flip side, once the story line is set the car adjustment seems bit repetitive in the second half, Sudden support from Jazleen, Sameer's sisters dance, little bit of dragging in the mid hours dilutes the fun. Still, the whole feel good factor is taken care and thus keeps you indulged in the film.

Camera work is fine and locals of Chandigarh add the needed flavor to the film. Editing is perfect, little bit of trimming in second half would have worked in better interest of the film.

Music & Direction:

Music by Sachin Gupta is peppy and has high dose of Punjabi flavor in it. But none of the songs are worth remembering.

Mere Dad Ki Maruti Movie Review

Director Ashima Chibber selects a simple tale and makes it interesting and entertaining. The director also manages to extract decent performance from the new comers. Wished, the makers would have added few more good scenes in the middle of the film to make it an all time entertainer. Never the less, it deserves full marks for giving a clean wholesome entertainer.

Ram Kapoor is good in his role and you will love his character, wished he had more to offer. Saqib Saleem does not look that impressive, but manages to act well and slides easily in his character. Prabal Panjabi is superb as Gattu and ends up being the most lovable character from the film. Rhea Chakraborty is sweet and bubbly. Ravi Kishan is wasted. Benazir, Karan and others give good support.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum hain, accha khaasa dum hain. It's a sweet.. feel good entertainer. If you have craving for such type of good and simple film, then you won't be disappointed with this one. It could have been an all time classic entertainer, but lack of some good moments in second half and face value the movie ends up to be a decent entertainer. One can also compare it with the 'Maruti' cars, which are Sasti, Sunder aur Tikaau.
