Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Review: Ehh Saheb, Yeh Theek Nahin

Dated : March, 8, 2013 BY Divya Solgama

Ratings : star

I still remember two years back when I saw 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' I was totally impressed by the work of 'The Sharp Eye' {meaning of Tighmanshu}. I use to love Tighmanshu's work right from his T.V Days {Star Bestsellers, etc} followed by his writing assignments {Dil Se, etc} leading to directing films {Haasil} with hard hitting themes. Sadly before 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' his few films lacked the much needed punch. But he came back with his best works - 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' & 'Paan Singh Tomar'. Talking about 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' what I loved was the total setting of the film, detailing of each and every characters, fiery dialogs, gripping screenplay and unexpected twists. Thus, when the sequel was announced and that too with 'Irrfan' joining the gang, the expectation level reached its pinnacle. So let's find out whether Tighmanshu Dhulia & his gang excels its benchmark level or might be another typical run of the mill type film banking on the past glory of its hit film.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Review

'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns' carry forwards the story of Saheb Aditya Pratap Singh {Jimmy Shergil}, who is now on wheelchair. Aditya Pratap Singh is now more powerful than earlier thanks to political connections of his wife/Begum Madhavi {Mahi Gill}. For the world they are husband & wife, but internally they are connected only for namesake. Thus, Aditya Pratap Singh decides to get married again to Ranjana {Soha Ali Khan} against the will of her father {Raj Babber}. Ranjana, on the other side loves Inderjeet Singh {Irrfan}. Due to Aditya Pratap Singh the life of Ranjana & Inderjeet changes. This change also starts reflecting in his and Madhavi's life too. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Story on basic level has similarities with 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' but this time has additional layers attached to it. The film starts with introduction of new characters {Irrfan, Soha, Raj Babber, etc} and takes its own sweet time to come on the right track. But once on the right track, it keeps taking minor diversions in the second half. One will enjoy scenes like Jimmy Shergil chatting with Mahi in her room, Irrfan worshiping his grandfather, Irrfan meeting Mahi, Irrfan at minister's office, Mahi seducing Irrfan, Jimmy keeping other Rajas' as hostages and few more. You will love the dialog-baazi by Jimmy, Irrfan and Mahi Gill.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Movie Review

On the flip side minor hurdles in screenplay fragments the flow of the film. Also, one might not get convince over the Soha's change of heart track along with Irrfan's reaction in the finale. These scenes are most essential part of the film and are done in bit hasty and abrupt manner. The whole conviction level is highly missing in these parts, leaving you with a rambling feeling. The film is very high on political quotient and such films are bit hard to digest for the general people.

Camera work is great and captures the flavor of the film. Editing was required in both halves of the films. The movie should have been trimmed down by 10-15 minutes. Also there are few scenes where the film looks bit abrupt due to bad editing.

Music & Direction:

Music by Sandeep Chowta is not at all impressive. Songs like 'Jhugnie', 'Khwab' and 'Kona Kona' are just passable. The item song by Mughda Godse - "Media" was horrible in terms of placement, choreography and performance. This song should be strictly omitted from the film.

Tighmanshu Dhulia tries to keep the original flavor of the film and succeeds in it. But, when it comes to take it above the benchmark set by 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' he stumbles around. Despite of the movie being lengthy, he keeps 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns' total entertaining with the sharp dialogs and interesting characters. On overall basis he has done a decent job but that hard hitting factor is little bit missing, especially in the finale part where you do not connect at all with the characters.

Jimmy Shergil is outstanding just the way he was in the first part. You will love his cold blooded looks and dialogs. Mahi Gill looks seductress and slips easily in her character. Her eyes and body language along with her attire works in favor of the film. Irrfan is superb and does a great job, wished his character was well written with more details and conviction. Soha Ali Khan is very bad and total contrast to all the good actors in the film. Pravesh Rana overacts and has huge hangover of Anuraag Kashyap style of talking. Raj Babber along with Deepak Rana gives good support.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Kaafi Dum hain on individual basis, but in comparison with the first part it lacks behind. Unlike other sequels which are just mere clones of its predecessor, this one actually works like a sequel. The movie is enjoyable and has some fantastic performances, good moments, high level politics and punchy dialogs. But thanks to weak moments in screenplay, abrupt editing and unconvincing direction in main parts of the film it ends up below the expectation mark. You will get the flavor of 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' but will be left bit dissatisfied and at end of the day one might remember the lines of a song from Subhash Ghai's "Khalnayak" - 'Ehh Saheb, Yeh Theek Nahin...'
