Quick Review

Diwali is one of the biggest and auspicious festivals celebrated in India, and thus releasing movies on this blissful festive season, has its own kind of attraction to watch it among the aam janta (mango people). Ajay Devgn's 'Son Of Sardaar' (SOS) has lots of expectations, bearing in mind the appealing promos, huge promotions, impressive star cast, promising storyline, and lastly a big clash with late Yash Chopra's last directorial film 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', along with the much hyped fight with it. However SOS was meant to give a comical family entertaining film to the mango people, and thus the makers had successfully lived up to its expectations.

Story

It's a story about two families, a long-lasting revengeful story, and a quirky love story in the middle of it. Jaswinder Singh Randhwa aka Jassi (Ajay Devgn) lives in London, and comes back to Punjab to finalize a deal of a piece of land, worth Rs. 50 lakh, which his late father had left on his name. However before coming to India, Jassi's uncle at London (Sanjay Mishra) had warned him about Balwinder Singh Sandur aka Balli's family. He revealed out the history of Randhwa and Sandur's families and their long-last revenge that started before 25 years, for which Balli is now eagerly waiting to kill the only heir of Randhwa's family, who is none other than but Jaswinder aka Jassi.

Son Of Sardaar Review

At railway station, Jassi met Sukhwinder aka Sukhi (Sonakshi Sinha), who is Balli's sister. Soon both became very good friends, without knowing the real identity of each other. After reaching Punjab and with some followed sequences, Jassi landed itself at Balli's house, again without knowing the real identity of each other. Somehow Jassi and Balli got familiar with the fact, but according to the rules set by Balli's family that guests are equivalent to god, so no violence should be carried out inside the house. How Jassi is now trying his best to escape from the house and his death, how Balli and his associates are keenly waiting to let Jassi keep his foot once outside their house, and in the midst of this how the unusual love story forms between Sukhi and Jassi, forms the crux of the movie.

Screenplay & Direction

Written by Ashwani Dhir and Robin Bhatt, 'Son Of Sardaar' is an official remake of Rajamouli''s Telugu film 'Maryada Ramanna', thus the basic storyline is more or less same. However, what impresses is the screenplay, narration and the way writer-director had handled the sequences in the film, which is entirely different from the original version. With respect to that, SOS surely promises a decent family entertainment, which is blended with good action, slapstick humour and pleasant dramatic parts. The movie is just meant to sit for a couple of hours in theatre, to laugh, to whistle, to have popcorn, to spend quality time with family, and lastly to just get entertained this Diwali.

Son Of Sardaar Movie Review

First hour provides only laugh, with a backseat of how Jassi gets to know about his long-last family feud, encountering with Sukkhi, and lastly how he enters in the mansion of Billu. The second half majorly focuses on certain dramatic sequences, along with the half-baked romantic angle between Jassi and Sukkhi. On the whole, SOS follows the trend of desi movies that only showcases on the watch-and-forget kind of entertaining films.

Sequences such as the very first intro scene of Ajay Devgn followed by his trademark stunt, Ajay and Sonakshi's railway boarding scene followed by nariyal (coconut), Mukul Dev chasing Ajay Devgn to kill him when he first met him, Ajay having a feast at Sanjay Dutt's house along with Punjabi's hospitality, Ajay desperately wanted to leave from Sanjay Dutt's house during pre-interval, Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla's romance near corridor, Ajay Devgn successfully made an attempt to leave from the house and then again landed on the same house,  the lori sequence, Sukkhi's bike entry sequence, the long fight scene between Ajay and Sanjay during climax, and much more hilarious, funny, engaging and remarkable.

However there are also few sequences that somehow tempt the viewers to shift their focus from the movie. Sequences such as Ajay Devgn desperately wants to leave from Sanjay Dutt's house during pre-interval was a bit stretchy, along with when Ajay successfully made an attempt to leave from Sanjay Dutt's house and then again landing on the same house. Moreover Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha's love story in the movie is half-baked, and also Sanjay Dutt's sudden change of heart at the end of the movie was not properly justified. The latter two sequences could have been more dramatize and impressive, and the above two should have been trimmed down a bit.

Music & Other Technicalities

Music given by Sajid-Wajid, Himesh Reshammiya and Sandeep Chowta are chartbusters. Although all the songs in the movie are just fillers, except for 'Bichdan' that moves the story ahead; it's pleasant to hear and as well to watch on the screen. Salman Khan's 'Po Po' song is a treat for his fans. Background score is superbly given by Sandeep Chowta, making an apt according to all the sequences.

Cinematography done by Aseem Bajaj deserves to be praised, especially the prolonged fight sequence between Ajay and Sanjay during climax. Editing was excellent, especially during action stunts, but with respect to storyline it could have been a bit shorter. Dialogues are hilarious, funny and impressive, especially the shayaris (poems) spoken by the Ajay, Sanjay and Juhi in the middle of the sequences and the respective punch-lines spoken by each and every characters in the movie. Action stunts were very impressive, that actually follows the same trend of south-style masala flicks. However some of the stunts were overcooked followed by extra usage of graphic-effects.

Performances

Although all the actors in the movie have already proved their talent in their earlier movies - be it leading ones or the supporting cast - everybody had given their best in their respective roles. Ajay Devgn was as usual first-rate, right from the first frame to the last frame. Ditto goes to Sanjay Dutt, who acts as a head of the family and eagerly wants revenge. Sonakshi Sinha looks very beautiful as a Punjabi kudi, and performs well according to her given character. Juhi was fabulous, where her sequences with Sanjay Dutt are quite enjoyable.

Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh are equally superb and excellent. Tanuja had a short role, but makes an impact and is a delight watching her on the screen after a long time. Rajesh Vivek, Sanjay Mishra, Puneet Issar and Mukesh Tiwari leaves an impression. Arjan Bajwa was good in his brief role, and rest others were also fine in their respective supporting roles.

Final Verdict

'Son Of Sardaar' is a film to watch in single screens, where people whistles on each and every stunts and enjoys watching south-masala flicks, just like Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore, Singham and so on. However in multiplexes, there might be a bit slow business.

On the other side, SOS does have a recipe of giving a family entertainment feast, but in the midst of this, it also gives an average kind of enjoyable treat. Overall, it's a film to watch without logic and you will get entertained in a decent manner.
