Quick Review

It's never easy to revisit the aftermath of any horrifying events we have witnessed in our life. I still remember the unlucky night of 26th November 2008 when Mumbai was being brutally attacked by the terrorists. We were tensed, shocked and shit scared in our houses. News was being flashed on TV screens across all the houses. Everyone had a fear within themselves of being attacked. Sleep seemed to have vanished and thousands of stories kept floating all around. At that time all we did was stay indoors in our houses and prayed to the Almighty for our safety. This sense of weaknesses was observed by almost every Mumbaikar and with changing times they have not been able to remove it from their mind & soul.

A B-grade film called 'Total Ten' & a tele film 'Unn Hazaroon Ke Naam' starring Vinod khanna along with Seema Biswas tried to capture these events on the screen. The first one was over dramatic full too filmy, but the later did a decent job as per its limitations. Now, after almost four years comes a film 'Attacks of 26/11' made by Ram Gopal Varma, who has been struggling with his direction form from almost a decade. So let's find out whether this time RGV will hit the bull's-eye and regain his directorial touch or might be another piece of trash, just like his last more than a dozen films.

The Attacks Of 26/11 Review

'Attacks of 26/11' is based on the real calamitous incidents occurred in Mumbai. The whole incident is narrated by Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria (Nana Patekar). Right from how the terrorist including Ajmal Kasab ( Sanjeev Jaiswal) came to India, to the brutal attacks by them in all the various parts of Mumbai.

Story has been written keeping in mind the real incidents with done minor cinematic alterations. Screenplay has been decently written with first half being totally focused on the operations by the terrorist which keeps continuing in the second half too followed by the discussions between Nana Patekar & Sanjeev Jaiswal. Right from the starting scene of how the terrorists reach India through the boat, to all the attacks ( Leopold Cafe, Hotel Taj Mahal, C.S.T station, Cama Hospital, Police vehicle, etc) along with Nana Patekar thinking about the events, Nana talking about his training and reaction over the attack, the nabbing of Ajmal Kasab, Nana Patekar scene in the morgue and few more. All these scenes make the film total worthy to watch.

The Attacks of 26/11 Movie Review

On the flip side, the few cinematic liberties does hamper the spirit of the film {Kasab's speech over religion, personal discussions, etc} along with few minor errors like showing Mumbai Central station as C.S.T. Also the performances by the entire terrorists were over the top and might make you feel that you are watching sequel to B-grade film 'Total Ten'. Also, the way RGV cuts off the Nariman House, Oberoi Hotel incidents makes you feel dissatisfied. Even the shoddy production values ruins the total hard hitting flavor of this film. The story should have been told in different and more contemporary manner. We have seen brilliant examples of films being made all across the globe with such type of themes.

Camera work is good and for a change Ram Gopal Varma has not even dared to attempt any of his silly camera angles. He plays it total safe and right to the point. As wrote earlier, the styling and detailing could have been much better. Same goes for editing as it's just plain and sober. Background music is just average.

Ram Gopal Varma has been the source of inspiration for many directors of today's time. He believed in making path breaking films and did succeed for quite a while. Sadly, he started losing his focus, Midas touch and vision. Even in the subjects where he had his own expertise, he started falling down big way. Thank god this time he climbs back with this film as he plays safe and does not experiment in the technical department. This also shows that if RGV would've played correct with his disastrous experiments we could have seen few better films. In 'Attacks of 26/11' though he does not cover the entire cataclysmyet with the half events he plays with our frustration and anger over the whole incidents. At every tragic event your blood starts to boil and you feel like punishing the criminals in the brutal manner. Towards the finale in the morgue scene he satisfies you for the time being by showing Nana Patekar's outburst. This is a big task for any director and Ramu passes out with flying colors. I also feel that a 10 year younger Ram Gopal Varma would have done fantastic justice to this film. He also mellows down the level of his film making, in order to have the mass appeal which might work in favor of the film in terms of box office in minimal manner.

Nana Patekar is superb in his small role. Loved the way he narrates the whole event with total calmness and patience. One can feel his frustration, weakness and anger. He is outstanding in the Morgue scene. Sanjeev Jaiswal as Ajmal Kasab hams a lot, especially in his speech scene, which unintentionally becomes quite funny. Atul Kulkarni is totally wasted. Same goes for Jitendra Joshi, Asif Basra, Ravi Kale and few more. Ganesh Yadav was impressive in his small role. All other actors were terrible.

Final Verdict

So bol meri 'Filmi Khopdi' iss film mein kitna hain Dum ?

Dum hain, Accha dum hain in terms of the total feel of the film. But on the negative side it does not do full justice to the shattering events. Also, the low production values and weak performances by the actors make it's a above average film which had all the potential of a classic film. Never the less, one should watch it for all the horrifying events along with great performance by Nana Patekar and last but not the least a decent attempt by Ram Gopal Varma.
