Romantic films have been one of the most favorite genres in our Hindi films. Right from the K.L Saigal or Ashok Kumar days till Rajesh Khanna era followed by Shah Rukh Khan mania, it was right there growing with the passing time. Romantic Hindi films are not meant to be painful or realistic; all it needs, is fantastic screen chemistry between the lead pair, popular soundtrack, good moments and larger than life setup. Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Sashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan and few more had their era and charisma which kept passing on to its new successor keeping the genre alive and fresh. But after Shah Rukh Khan, there was no proper successor who could make these films work on his individual charm and charisma. We had many small time rulers like Hrithik, Shahid, Imraan and even Ranbir but none of them manage to concur that throne, which by default still lies with Shah Rukh Khan.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Review

After a long gap Ranbir Kapoor comes back in popular cinema and that too, in a romantic film. Foot tapping music, hot screen pair, big banner, proper marketing makes his next film 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' a sure shot winner at the box office. So let's find out whether he'll be able to give our Hindi cinema next romantic king who runs such films mainly on his screen presence.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' begins with story of three school friends Bunny {Ranbir Kapoor}, Avi {Aditya Roy Kapur} and Aditi {Kalki Koechlin} going for a trekking trip to mountains of Manali. They are joined by another fellow school mate Naina {Deepika Padukone}, who is experiencing such stuffs for first time in her life. Her association with Bunny keeps growing throughout her journey. But Bunny has his own dreams, where there is no place for anyone else. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

Story might remind you of many Yash Chopra type of films, which is a common feature in now a day's big budget romantic films. But the fresh chemistry between the lead pair along with pacy first half sets the movie on right track. There are some interesting scenes like Farooq Sheikh and Ranbir's chat before the trip, Ranbir-Deepika's station meet scene, fun- time in train followed by the whole 'Jumma Chumma' song scene, Ranbir's opinion about marriage, Deepika talking about herself to Ranbir at the campfire, Ranbir-Deepika chat in the snow while climbing the mountain, Aaditya's frustration in front of Ranbir, Ranbir-Deepika comparing their lives during the Udaipur tour and few more. All these scenes work as positive points in favor of the film.

On the flip side, the writing does not grow as per the flow of the film. Post interval the film takes its own sweet time to come back on the tracks. At times it just keeps dragging on, even after establishing its points. The writer gets bit confused with its characters and sums up the film in a hurried way. The actor's holds up the film in the second half along with the popular songs, which if had some decent writing would have created wonders. Cinematography is superb and works in the favor of the film. It gives the film its needed youth looks with some fantastic locations of Himachal valley, Rajasthan along with popular foreign locations. Editing is superb in the first half, but become lethargic in the second half. The film could have been easily trimmed by 10-15 minutes in the second half, which is very lengthy.

Music & Direction:

Music by Pritam is rocking. 'Battameez Dil' is the most popular track along with 'Balam Pichkari'; both these songs are beautifully choreographed as per the need and demand of the film. 'Gagra' features dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit and it was great to see her dancing with the heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor. 'Dilli Wali Girlfriend' is another popular dance track featuring the lead pair. 'Subhanallah' lacked the romanticism; 'Kabira' is haunting and has the soul of the film. 'Illahi' is well shot and properly placed.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Movie

I had loved Ayan Mukherji's debut film 'Wake Up Sid', where he had displayed his passion for films. Every scene of that film was a gem, thus was excited to see him making an out and out commercial entertainer with his buddy Ranbir Kapoor. He starts with flying colours and gives a proper tribute to Yash Chopra and Karan Johar type of films on his behalf , in the first half. But as he ventures the second half, he tries to get his 'Wake Up Sid' style which fails to connect with the film. Thus, lacks in the entertainment quotient in the second half along with minimal happenings in the script. He fails to live up to the expectations and the base set in the first half of the film.

Ranbir Kapoor is one such actor who keeps enhancing his level of acting with every release of his. In such a small age he has potential to carry the whole film on his shoulders. Here too, he carries it through his charms, charisma, dance, screen presence and performance. The moment he is out of frame, you will understand the hollowness in the film. Deepika looks cute and beautiful and displays her love and passion through her expressions. Together they complement each other on screen and bring up a great chemistry. Aaditya Roy Kapur gives another good performance, wished his role had some detailing in it. Kalki is good in her part. Farooq Sheikh was superb in his small role. Evelyn Sharma, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Poorna Jagannathan, Tanvi Azmi and Dolly Ahluwalia in their parts were perfect. Cameo by Rana Duggubati was unwanted. Madhuri Dixit looked fantastic in the item song.

So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum hain, accha khaasa dum hain with total entertainment indulged in it. The film is total entertaining with foot tapping music, star value, good performance and fantastic first half. But due to lengthy second half and weak writing it fails to be a trend setter in terms of films like 'DDLJ' or 'Jab We Met' and ends up as a proper summer entertainer only. As for Ranbir Kapoor, there is still time for his coronation as the next romantic king as he needs big makers like Yash Chopra to do full justice to his talent. But with 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' he displays his potential to sit over the throne very soon and sends signal all over saying move over SRK as its RK {Ranbir Kapoor} time.
